Lighthouse was initiated on 19th March 2003. It began in a humble manner with only 6 clients and 12 volunteers using the St Francis Xavier’s Church compound. It was the brainchild of Rev. Fr. Fabian Dicom who was the Administrator of POHD at that time; operating only 3 days a week, offering only packet food for dinner at 5.30pm. As the number of clients increased, tea time was added. Bathing and clothes washing facilities was offered. By word of mouth, the number of clients grew to currently serving about 60 for tea and about 100 for dinner.
Our clients can be anybody who is in need of our help. They could be homeless people, orphans, jobless, single mothers, former drug addicts or alcoholics, sex workers, the lost and stranded. We call them ‘clients’ because we serve them. It’s our service to them.
Throughout the 20 years of operation, Lighthouse has expanded into many sections and added facilities. As mentioned above, the bathing and clothe washing facilities was introduced to instill personal hygiene and responsibility among the clients. Thereafter came Lightworks, St. Peter’s Home, Recycling Centre, Lighthouse Bakery (now Social Enterprise Partner), Lighthouse Café (now Social Enterprise Partner) & Thrift Shop
